Grand Prize: Vietnam-era USMC M40 Sniper Rifle Clone

Rifle

2nd Place Prize!

CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) M1911A1 Service Pistol

Student with rifle

We are pleased to offer a unique and historically significant rifle for our inaugural raffle! And it’s appropriate, because this one is the first iteration of the venerable M40 series of sniper rifles the Corps has relied on for 57 years. With our focus on historical preservation, we like to take things in chronological order!

Marine holding rifle

The M40-series sniper rifle was initially adopted by the US Marine Corps in 1966 during the Vietnam War. It went through several design changes over the years, but it always featured a Remington 700 SA chambered in 7.62mm, including the last of the series, the M40A6. These first M40’s were factory-built by Remington and topped with a black or green Redfield 3x9 power optic before being sent over to Vietnam to arm our Scout Snipers.

Marine holding rifle

Our prize rifle is an authentic clone of a USMC M40 sniper rifle, circa 1966, with an ORIGINAL “Greenie” Redfield scope. Each component (minus the receiver) of our prize rifle is an ORIGINAL “take-off” part that once was part of an actual Vietnam-era Marine Corps sniper rifle. Even the receiver is a six-digit in a similar serial number range to the originals. It is perhaps the most accurate depiction that can be made of the rifles carried by Marine Scout Snipers in Vietnam from 1966 through the end of the war without stealing one from a museum!

The prize rifle offered here is donated by SSA Member Ryan Niederman, and is built by a MOS 2112 Precision Weapons Technician. It comes complete with all the correct markings, including the “US” roll stamp above the serial number, and an original gun book signed by the builder.

The photos above are accurate representations, but are not of the actual prize rifle. The build is now complete, so scroll down to see the completed build, individual components, and photos of the rifle under construction. Thanks for your patience!
